4C hair is often described as “hard to manage” or “does not grow”. Neither is true. 4C hair grows at the same rate as any other hair type, around 1 cm a month. The difference is that it is the most fragile hair type, so it breaks easily if it is not cared for properly.
The good news: with the right routine, 4C hair can be soft, healthy and long. Here is a simple routine that works.
What makes 4C hair different
4C hair has very tight, zig-zag coils, often with little visible curl pattern. It shrinks up to 75% of its true length when dry, so it can look like it is not growing even when it is. Because of all the bends in each strand:
- Natural scalp oils struggle to reach the ends
- Moisture escapes quickly
- Each bend is a weak point where breakage happens
So the whole routine comes down to two things: moisture and gentle handling.
The products you need
- Sulfate-free shampoo or co-wash
- Moisturising conditioner (with lots of slip for detangling)
- Deep conditioner
- Water-based leave-in conditioner
- A heavy sealing oil, such as batana oil or Jamaican black castor oil
- A butter or cream, such as shea butter
- Wide-tooth comb, satin bonnet and a spray bottle

The 4C wash day routine (every 7–10 days)
Step 1: Pre-poo with oil
Before washing, apply batana oil or another oil to your hair and scalp. Leave it on for 30 minutes to overnight. This protects your hair from being stripped by shampoo and makes detangling easier.
Step 2: Wash in sections
Divide hair into 4–6 twisted or braided sections. Shampoo the scalp in each section, focusing on the scalp rather than scrubbing the lengths. Rinse well.
Step 3: Condition and detangle
Apply a generous amount of conditioner. Detangle each section gently, starting from the ends and working up to the roots, with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb. Never detangle 4C hair dry.
Step 4: Deep condition
Apply a deep conditioner, cover with a plastic cap and leave it on for 20–30 minutes, with gentle heat if possible. Rinse with cool water.
Step 5: Apply the LOC method
While your hair is still damp, work section by section:
- Liquid: Water-based leave-in conditioner
- Oil: Seal with batana oil, focusing on the ends
- Cream: Finish with a butter or curl cream
Step 6: Stretch and style
Use twists, braids, bantu knots or threading to stretch your hair as it dries. Stretched hair tangles less and is easier to manage. Protective styles that keep your ends tucked away help with length retention.
Mid-week moisture refresh
4C hair rarely stays moisturised for a full week without help. Every 2–3 days:
- Lightly spray your hair with water or a leave-in.
- Reseal the ends with a few drops of oil.
- Retwist or re-band if needed.
Night-time routine
- Always cover your hair with a satin bonnet or scarf, or sleep on a satin pillowcase.
- Massage your scalp with batana oil 2–3 times a week. Follow our batana oil routine for hair growth.
- Put a few drops on your edges every night if they are thin.
Common 4C hair mistakes
- Detangling dry hair. This is the biggest cause of breakage.
- Using only oil to moisturise. Oil seals moisture in, but water is what moisturises. Always apply a water-based product first.
- Skipping trims. Split ends travel up the hair. Trim every 3–4 months.
- Tight braids and heavy extensions. These pull out edges over time.
- Too much heat. Blow-drying and straightening often weakens 4C hair. Use low heat and a heat protectant if you must.
- Wearing protective styles for too long. Keep braids and twists in for 4–6 weeks at most.
How to tell if your routine is working
Track these every month:
- Less hair in your comb after detangling
- Fewer broken short pieces on your shoulders and sink
- Softer hair for longer after wash day
- Longer stretched length (take a photo of your hair stretched each month)
The bottom line
4C hair thrives on moisture, patience and gentle care. Keep your routine simple, be consistent, and protect your ends. Adding a rich oil like batana to your routine helps keep your hair soft and your scalp healthy.

Frequently asked questions
How do I keep 4C hair moisturised?
Use the LOC method. Apply water or a water-based leave-in, seal with an oil such as batana or castor oil, then finish with a cream or butter. Refresh mid-week and sleep in a satin bonnet.
How often should I wash 4C hair?
Every 7 to 10 days works for most people with 4C hair. Washing too often can dry it out, while waiting too long can cause buildup on the scalp.
Why is my 4C hair not growing?
In most cases, 4C hair is growing but breaking at the same rate. Dryness, rough detangling, tight styles and friction from cotton are the usual causes. Focus on moisture and gentle handling to retain length.
What is the best oil for 4C hair?
Heavier oils seal moisture into 4C hair best. Batana oil, Jamaican black castor oil and olive oil are excellent choices.
